Thirty years of inaction have now materialized as substantial social costs.
Today, that unaddressed challenge returns in a sharper, more formidable form: Generative AI. The nature of the gap has changed dramatically. While the 1995 divide centered on how quickly one could search for information, the current gap focuses on how effectively one can think, reason, and create alongside AI. This new dynamic directly impacts personal self-efficacy and cognitive identity.
To frame this trajectory, we can view both eras as part of a single continuum: Digital Divide 1.0 (1995) and AI Divide 2.0 (2026). This article examines why the current divide is accelerating, quantifies the cost of leaving it unaddressed, and explores LIAYN (Love is All You Need)—a volunteer initiative founded in 2023—and its human-centered framework designed to restore generational connection.

In 1998, Japanese psychiatrist Tamaki Saito formalized the concept of hikikomori [6], observing how digital connectivity enabled sustained physical withdrawal among youth. Concurrently, studies on the "internet paradox" [8] and digital exclusion [7] highlighted how shifting communication online isolated older adults from family networks, leaving them vulnerable to double isolation.
These two phenomena—youth social withdrawal and elderly solitude—share a common foundation: systemic social isolation expressed across different stages of life.
According to health statistics in South Korea, suicide rates per 100,000 people stand at 22.2 for individuals in their 20s, rising to 39.0 for those in their 70s and 59.4 for those aged 80 and older—nearly 2.7 times higher than young adults [1]. The suicide rate for Korean seniors aged 80+ is three times the OECD average [2]. Sociological research confirms that unaddressed isolation in youth accumulates over a lifespan, ultimately manifesting as extreme isolation in late adulthood. Youth reclusion marks the beginning of this cycle; elderly solitude represents its cumulative end.
AI Divide 2.0 accelerates this rift. Historically, grandparents provided an unconditional emotional buffer distinct from parental discipline. As younger generations adopt AI-native ways of thinking and working, communication barriers widen between generations. Without common ground, youth lose non-judgmental mentors, while seniors experience profound alienation as technology reshapes everyday interaction.

Leaving generational disconnect unaddressed carries tangible economic consequences for society as a whole.

LIAYN (Love is All You Need) is a K-volunteer group founded in 2023. While AI has become an everyday tool for Gen Z and Millennials, it often presents a severe digital barrier for adults aged 65 and older—the very generation that built Korea's modern industrial foundation—deepening social isolation and generational disconnect. Preventing this rapid tech gap from solidifying into a permanent societal issue requires moving beyond basic device instruction toward a human-centered approach to technology.
The mission of LIAYN is to practice "AI Humanism" by leveraging generative AI to restore cherished life moments for digitally marginalized elders, preserving human dignity and rebuilding genuine social connection across generations. By bringing their vibrant past back to life, LIAYN offers emotional healing, memory revival, and meaningful dialogue—instilling pride and confidence while reminding younger generations that seniors once lived through the same passionate youth. Building on proven field experience, our broader goal is to establish a sustainable "digital inclusion" welfare network within local communities, expanding the reach of human dignity through AI Humanism.
LIAYN's 3-Step Action Model
- Memory Content Creation (Digital Restoration): Combining present-day portraits of elders with generative AI to restore their youthful memories, crafting these stories into engaging short-form videos and emotional posts tailored for Gen Z and Millennials, publishing 4+ posts monthly on Instagram.
- Spontaneous Intergenerational Empathy (Online Empathy): Driving social media hashtag campaigns to deepen post engagement, building psychological bridges between generations by achieving 100+ monthly "likes" and supportive comments from younger users.
- Offline Emotional Delivery (Offline Connection & Healing): Collecting warm comments left by younger users on Instagram, formatting them into physical keepsakes (such as printed letters or booklets), and delivering them directly to elders in person (targeting 20+ recipients)—turning online empathy into real-world emotional healing and intergenerational conversation.
This process offers elders renewed self-worth while reminding younger users that seniors walked the same path of youth—transforming technology from a barrier into a warm bridge.
6. Parallel Research: Temporal Self-Interaction in HCI (Jeon et al., 2025)
LIAYN's field activities since 2023 align with recent human-computer interaction (HCI) research exploring how AI can facilitate self-reflection across time.
At ACM CHI 2025, Jeon et al. presented "Letters from Future Self" [20], a study where young adults exchanged messages with an LLM-driven agent representing their future selves. The research demonstrated that interacting with a visual, time-shifted version of oneself enhanced self-continuity, engagement, and psychological resilience during career exploration.
While that study focused on young adults interacting with a future self to alleviate career anxiety, LIAYN applies a similar principle in reverse—connecting seniors with their past youth. Recreating these memories stimulates reminiscence, reinforces self-worth, and fosters empathy among younger audiences by humanizing older generations. It illustrates how generative AI can serve as a catalyst for emotional healing and intergenerational unity [16, 20].
7. Measuring Impact Beyond Online Metrics
To systematically evaluate LIAYN's social impact beyond basic engagement metrics, we implement four structured assessment methodologies:
- Qualitative Sentiment Analysis: Categorizing online responses into emotional connection, curiosity, and neutral categories to track shifts in empathetic dialogue over time.
- Inclusion of Other in the Self (IOS) Scale: Applying validated psychological metrics [15, 18] to measure changes in how young adults perceive their closeness to older generations before and after viewing restored stories.
- Behavioral Conversion Tracking: Monitoring how online engagement translates into real-world actions, such as writing letters, signing up for volunteer work, or attending intergenerational events.
- Controlled A/B Testing: Comparing public responses to standard portraits versus AI-restored youth narratives to isolate the unique impact of memory restoration.
8. Conclusion: Love Is All You Need — Human Connections Above Tech
If Digital Divide 1.0 laid the groundwork for online isolation in 1995, AI Divide 2.0 challenges how we value human experience and intergenerational relationships today. The societal cost of ignoring this divide continues to rise.
Systemic policy solutions—such as reverse mentoring, AI literacy, and isolation prevention funding—must be paired with empathetic initiatives that reframe generational differences as part of a shared human journey.
